Castle of Sighs by Jennifer Murgia

Rating: 3 stars

Series: Forest of Whispers

Malevolent forces were watching and lurking in the shadows. Rune was coping with these forces since she was reclaiming her birthright. These forces or spirits were technically witches, but for most of the book it seemed more like a ghost story.

The story moved very slowly until over halfway through it. Then many secrets began to unravel all at once. The truth about Laurentz was odd. Other than the fact that it made him and Rune have a bond, there wasn’t any point to it or at least not one I could discern.

The story was wrapped up with this installment, but it felt disconnected in many ways from Forest of Whispers. The setting was completely different. The witch hunt/trials weren’t really a factor in this. I had been hoping for Rune to really come into her power, which she did in her own way. Magic just happened when she needed it; she never had to learn or struggle to do anything. I was satisfied with the ending but wished a few more things had been included in the story.

I received this in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley.
