Cold Burn of Magic by Jennifer Estep

Rating: 4 stars

Series: Black Blade #1

A great start to a new series! Lila is a 17 year old without a family. She lives in a world where some people have magic and some don’t. People with magic are the ones that control everything. Lila has magic but had to hide it until the day she got into a jam and couldn’t escape the notice of the families any longer.

Young adult is not one of my favorite genres, but I was pleasantly surprised with this. None of the characters were whiny and immature although most of them were in their late teens or early twenties. All of the characters were well developed. Even the minor characters had personality. Lila was an awesome heroine. She was kick ass and tough. She had a rare magical power, but that wasn’t what made her strong. She could definitely defend herself without using magic. It was cool that she didn’t completely depend on her magic to survive. Also Lila was independent and stood up for herself without managing to come off as bitchy.

In this world there are people with magic. There are people without magic called rubes, and there are monsters that lurk in the shadows. The majority of the people with magic are divided into families, and they lord their power over the rubes. The families fight amongst each other for power, and they’ll take out anyone who gets in their way. The monsters don’t seem to play by any rules but their own, but they weren’t deeply explored in this. There wasn’t a cliffhanger at the end, but I look forward to reading the next one.

I received this from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
