Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs

Rating: 4 stars

Series: Alpha & Omega #4

Charles and Anna went on a leisurely trip to Arizona to visit his old friend Joseph and to get Anna a new horse. They weren’t there long when something went drastically wrong with Joseph’s daughter-in-law, which lead them to investigate some bizarre events that had been happening in the town.

I can’t say much more about the story without divulging too much of the plot, but it was heavily focused on the fae. The fae in this world (which is also the same world in the Mercy Thompson series) have always fascinated me. Some of them are good, but many of them are evil. The fae had been hidden away for a while, but the grey lords (the fae leaders) had been letting some of the most dangerous of them loose. It is likely that the fae will cause problems in both series in the books to come.

Since this was in a different setting most of the characters were new. All of them were fleshed out, and it was easy to connect with them. Charles and Anna were in disagreement about one issue. Their relationship is strong and they have plenty of time to figure things out. The book did drag a bit in the parts that focused on the horses, but those weren’t significant portions of the story either. As a whole I really enjoyed this.

A big thank you to netgalley for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review!
